About

Pub ImpressionsWe are a father and son who, each week, explore a number of London’s greatest pubs.  As our inspiration, we are taking London’s Best Pubs, by Peter Haydon and Tim Hampson.  However, we’re not just copying their idea.  Rather, we’re noting down our first impressions.  We’re not interested in what a pub is like at the weekends or whether it serves different types of wine or a special bar menu.  We’re just telling you what happened to us when we visited because, to be honest, that’s quite likely to be your experience too.

To help generate some comparisons and give a feel of what we’ve experienced, we’re breaking down the visit into some key ratings at the top of each post:

  • Welcome: Poor/Adequate/Good/Excellent
  • Service: Poor/Adequate/Good/Excellent (SIT means ‘Served In Turn’)
  • Beer: Poor/Adequate/Good/Excellent
  • Toilets: Basic/Good/Unusual

London's Best Pubs - our inspirationWe’re also taking the chance to meet up with people from our past, and we’ll post their thoughts here too.  For more explanation as to the rationale behind all this, and the criteria for our overall ratings, check out our first post.

Special mention among our guests must go to Stanley, who has drawn the cartoon at the top of this page.  He joined us for a night which included The Dog and Duck, The Coach and Horses, and The Pillars of Hercules.

We aim to publish posts around 5pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (assuming we’ve visited three pubs the week before) – so do check back again regularly for more impressions of London’s finest pubs.

Finally, please feel free to comment if you think there’s somewhere we should visit!
